MATA - ‘Face’
This design was inspired by the face or the eyes of God ‘Mata Ariki’ and how he watches over us all. Hoete had the idea to bolt the eyes out and the fine Mataora was illustrated by Kahara Sheperd who also used Hoete’s face as the MUSE. We wanted this design to uplift Māori men by beautifying the face in gold. This idea was also inspired by an excerpt from Crozet on Marion Du Fresno’s Voyage (1772) describing Māori men as ‘Handsome and well formed, well proportioned mouths’ even describing in detail how beautiful their nose, teeth and bodies were.
Sizes: S/M, L/XL, 2XL/3XL
