Holding On Poster
Holding On belongs to our Wāhine Series, with creative direction and concept by Adrienne Whitewood, beautifully photographed by Amanda Ashton, and featuring model Kapua Bennett.
Inspired by the historic postcards of the Whakarewarewa guides, this artwork reflects Adrienne’s fascination with the romanticism and shifting ideals of what Māori beauty has been depicted as throughout time. Reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, the piece speaks to the evolving image of wāhine Māori today.
Set against a repeated backdrop featuring Kapua holding a taiaha, the composition blends cultural strength with subtle references to Frida Kahlo — acknowledging global artistic influences while grounding the piece in Māori identity. The imagery carries the kupu:
"Kia mau ki tō ahurea Māori" — Hold on to your Māori culture.
A reminder to anchor ourselves in heritage as we move into the future.
