Whēki Split Tie Dress - Blush
Whēki Print
Inspired by our recent trip to Rarotonga I looked at our ancestors' journey through the islands to Aotearoa. Created through the lens of ‘popular culture’ - this collection features figures in a waka looking out to the land, inspired by ‘Māoriland romanticism’ prevalent in the 1890s. I also incorporated printed imagery of the whēki + taniko, which is my nostalgic take on the ‘Island shirt’ that was popular in Hawaii in the 1930s. I designed this collection in reference to ‘cultural terms’ and inspiration made from Māori belongs to Māori. Embrace effortless style with pieces that share a cultural connection.
Ngā Whetu Print on the skirt
Taniko is the traditional Māori art of intricate twining, we are inspired by the taniko borders of woven korowai (cloaks) and create our own contemporary interpretation of this beautiful art form.
